The circulation is a very important element on architecture because this is the one that connects all the different parts and functions of an entire building or public space, to create adequate relationships between each one of those. A lot of architects base their designs in the circulation because this element marks the path that the people will follow inside the building and this affects as well the perception of the entire architectural piece. This can determine the shape of the structure, that’s why poor circulation can transform a masterpiece in a real disaster. We must be borne in mind that there are two types of circulation: horizontal and vertical and we must give equal weight to both of them. The Salt Lake City Library is a great example of good circulation, is creative and comfortable. About it, we can see that the entrance of the library marks the main axis of the building and its direction; here is a straight line that determines the circulation on the lower floor, which ends on the vertical circulation module, the focal point, in this case stairs which leads to the upper floors. The horizontal circulation in the five upper floors is composed by corridors surrounding the main space of the library: an atrium of six floor height. In the upper floors the horizontal circulation is also given by bridges which are an alternative to the corridors.
The surroundings of the library are in perfect harmony with the structure that curves itself in its exterior and gives a wide entrance to the main space of the building, the fabulous atrium. The same curves repeat on the distribution of the green areas outside, this in a very organic manner providing a very appealing look. These green areas are not so close to the building to bring out its character and magnificence, to let the library be the unique focal point of the place.
